Preparing For Mass Casualties

It's bad enough to have to think about what might happen in case we end up going to war with Iran, if they have nuclear weapons, and picture all the doomsday scenarios you can come up with.

When you read something like this, about the plan being prepared for graves for mass casualties in case nuclear Iran really happens, is really morbid and can really put a damper on things. Obviously the plans must be prepared, but it is just striking to read it. It gives one pause to realize what all the rest of the talk might actually mean.

The current national plan, for such an eventuality, consists of a mass grave, along with the possibility of storage in a cooler system, until the emergency passes. At that point, the bodies would be transferred to individual graves.

The chevra kadisha has now presented it's own plan. They say their plan is more sensitive to the trauma of the families of the victims, and is also more respectful to the dead. Their plan consists of preparing large amounts of empty graves throughout the country adjacent to existing cemeteries with the necessary infrastructure already in place. This would not require a reburial, which can be traumatic for the families, and is more respectful to the dead.

Whichever it will be, it is a necessary preparation but a morbid consideration.
